The elements of landscape design include balance, form, color, unity, simplicity, texture and scale. The design with the rest of the property in relation with the plants is the scale. Color is the central part of the design and brings life while at the same time creating mood. Color theory is mixing or combining of different colors to create specific color combinations.

Some of the color schemes that can be considered are primary, secondary and tertiary. Orange, green and purple are secondary colors, primary colors are red, yellow and blue and tertiary colors are a combination of both. Texture is the touch or visual surface of the plants and hardscape in the design. Flowers, plant leaves and bark are the parts of the plant in which texture is seen.

In the design the shape of plants is form. The form to use is influenced by plant shapes and examples include; low spreading plants draw the eye to the horizon, individuals plants break up a repeating pattern. The other element is balance in which controls the color, scale, form and texture. There are two forms of balance which are symmetrical and asymmetrical to ensure the design is properly weighted. A more formal approach which uses a center line of the area being designed and creates a mirror image of the design on the side of the center line is symmetrical balance. An element that manages consistency and repetition is unity.
